The Financial Ombudsman uses published bands for distress and inconvenience. A wrongful CIFAS marker usually sits in the £750–£5,000 range, with more serious cases going higher.
Consequential losses are separate — higher mortgage rates, lost investment opportunities, or the cost of denied credit can all be recovered on top of the distress award.
The Ombudsman's largest awards go to claimants who evidence emotional harm and can prove the causal link between the marker and specific financial losses.
